Goodbye to Greenery! 2018 has gone all cosmic and spiritual with the announcement Ultra Violet is the new Pantone Colour of the Year. It's a very bold choice, but a great choice for reflecting calm, transcentalism and hope in an increasingly frenetic, stressful world we currently live in now. It also has strong nostalgic qualities, reminding many of us of the 1990s and the era of Prince, techno music, silk bomber jackets, Ultra Nate and that big Tellytubby, Tinky Winky.

We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to Pantone 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level. From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.

With the otherworldliness Ultra Violet suggests, I imagine will ensure 2018 will introduce more cosmic and science-fiction designs to interiors, coupled with chromes and metallics but also cleaner, more neutral backdrop colours as pure whites and greys. I expect to see it popping up as key pieces of furniture rather than surrounding walls, an armchair or rug, especially as these purples go so well when used for materials such as velvet and silks.

Pantone see Ultra Violet being used in various ways when it comes to interiors  "Ultra Violet can transform a room into one of extraordinary self-expression, or conversely, its polish can tone down a room with subdued, modern pairings. Adding spice and brightness, Ultra Violet calls attention to a tufted couch, a piece of art, or accent wall. As a color that can take you in so many directions, Ultra Violet makes a statement in any space, whether it’s one of tradition and elegance or unexpected boldness. In hospitality, we are seeing purples like Ultra Violet take center stage in interior spaces as large and small hotels harness color and design to entice travelers and stay relevant."

We're looking forward to seeing how designers decide to embrace this new radical colour over the upcoming months. Don't forget to let us know what you think and if you'll be using it in your home.
