INTRODUCE YOURSELF AND TELL US WHERE YOU’RE BASED

My name is Ben Hanley and I’m based at West Elm of Tottenham Court Road

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING?

I manage Design Services at West Elm London, which is a busy crazy job of two halves and I love it! We offer a popular interior design and styling service which I run with an amazing team of talented people, our day is often a whirlwind of floor plans, mood boards and design consultations. The other half of my job is rooted in the A&D community, offering them help and support with their projects and providing them with information and advice on our products, going above and beyond with these clients has built us quite a reputation that I am proud of.

DESCRIBE YOUR DESIGN STYLE IN THREE WORDS

Modern, Eclectic, Sleek.

EXPLAIN WHY YOU CHOSE TO COLLABORATE WITH SPACE SHACK?

Space Shack are a loyal and passionate client. They have been fun and professional to work with and their passion for design and attention to detail is inspiring.

WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESIGNER PLACE TO SHOP?

West Elm of course! There is such a diverse mix of aesthetics that work so well together and can cater to everyone’s tastes.

West Elm is much more than just a shopping experience. We create relationships with our customers and find out how they use their space at home and what inspires them. With such a variety of iconic styles, we can create eclectic interiors with a mix of mid-century and industrial pieces.

WHO IS THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR WORK?

At west elm, our design service team is seeking influence everywhere. As a brand, our ethos of collaboration with talented designers and craftspeople from around the world, means that we have a global influence of style and trendsetting.

WHAT’S THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE ON THE PROJECT?

I think our biggest challenge we face is deciding what items we are NOT going to use. Luckily our clients usually come in with pieces in mind that they’ve already fallen in love with, so we work around that.

WHAT’S BEEN THE BIGGEST EXTRAVAGANCE?

I have seen some pretty extravagant design purchases in my career, but during my time at West Elm I think the biggest has to have been a client that bought 160 of the same decorative item to go in a party bag for guests of a birthday party.

WHAT’S BEEN THE BEST BARGAIN BUY?

I think one of the best and unrealised bargains at west elm, is our rugs. Our rugs are all handcrafted in India by artisans with inspiring stories that we connect with the broader market. You can learn more about our artisan collaborations on our YouTube Channel.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE SPACE IN YOUR HOME?

My living room. It’s an eclectic space that’s been curated over the years. I’ve added pieces of furniture and accessories that I found in London and while travelling – they all tell a story about my life and the things I love.

DO YOU HAVE ANY DESIGN ADVICE?

Do not be afraid to match styles and furnish your space with pieces that you absolutely love. Following trends often ends up with having a home that resembles a furniture store catalogue. Characterful interiors are created over time with items that are a visual reflection of a person’s life story.
