With summer in full swing now, you might be thinking of a little spending spree to breathe some life into your garden or patio. We all know colour is key when it comes to creating some sunshine of your very own, and summer sales are already starting to appear online but what trends this year are making an impact across the high street and which brands are getting it right? Don’t forget summer looks are equally important for an extension or any interior, especially if you don’t have an outside space of your own. Luckily, we seen a few themes filter through over last few months, so we’ve put together our very own selection for this season which will lighten not only your mood and wallet, but more importantly, your home décor.
Welcome to The Jungle
The Lion King has been remade and green as an interior colour is certainly a favourite for 2019. The Jungle floor mat designed by Beaumont and available at Amara, along with the Jangala velvet cushions from Made are not for the timid home designers out there. These vibrant tropical themed items are daring and bold statement pieces, and an all year-round winner in our books. These large emerald green print palm designs literally bring the outside inside your living area. Luscious and leafy look introduce a tropical conservatory vibe to your home, with velvet and woven textures giving the look some heft and quality. It’s easy to go over the top with this look but even those who may not be as brave can still enjoy a few choice leafy items and still enjoy the drama and adventure Jungle brings to any interior. Coupled with some real foliage from Patch.com, all that’s missing is a parrot and a perhaps machete to make your way through to the kitchen!
To the left of Jungle is the Mexican look, more urban, but as equally colourful, and this is one of my favourite design styles making an appearance this year. Mexico City is one of the top tourist destinations in the world, and those lucky enough to visit will be struck by the vibrant colourful painted buildings, the trees and people who surround them. You will also see a lot of beautiful hand-painted earthenware designs, Aztec motifs, and plastic weaved furniture. The Yuri’s lounge chair from MADE is a fabulous interpretation for your outdoor space. We love the use of bright colours like pink and green throughout, and this astounding chair uses an intricate weave and slim angle legs - a clear throwback to the ’60s - making it the perfect piece when looking to relax during those late summer evenings. If you want to continue your Mexican alfresco look, John Lewis are doing a range of hand-painted terracotta dinnerware including some large platters that look as though they belong to Frida Kahlo herself. Ideal for oven-to-table serving, this oval floral platter is ideal for warming up in the oven.
On a smaller scale, you can add some Mexican style with these two Zehn Festival planters also from MADE. The earthenware masked duo in teal and bright yellow are guaranteed to give your garden a playful finish. If you want something more practical for summer and less homemade however, designer Aaron Probyn has created a line of sleek, lightweight melamine dinnerware for West Elm, making it easy to take the party outside. The heard-wearing teal curved design works well with those looking for a more contemporary look.
Mustard, Mustard, Mustard
Mustard hues have been the go-to shade for a while, but the summer months it’s come in to its own. And boy, are people are embracing it when it comes to soft furnishings, and over the warmer months in our homes. Say goodbye to small pops of mustard – go big or go home, we say! Larger investment pieces of furniture are the way forward, and designers like John Lewis are designing a range of cushions and number of sofa designs this season, allowing your entire rooms to be filled with this fresh colour. If this is far too much yellow for your taste, you could opt for a Lalai mustard rug from Swoon Editions instead. Not only does it say summer, mustard is a versatile shade that works brilliantly with millennial pink, teal and striking indigo blue, and unpretentious white.
Whatever summer look you end up going, just have fun with it!
